Directions:
From the airport make a left onto Hwy 11 heading out to "Volcano".
When you see the Zoo sign on the right, veer to the Left hand lane and turn onto HYW 130, the “Pahoa turn-off” (the turn off will be about 10-15 mintes from the airport).
Continue on this road to Pahoa for about 7 miles, and watch out for the 7 Mile Marker on the right hand side of the road. Turn RIGHT here onto Ainaloa Blvd.
Take this down about 1 mile or so, until you see the “Children School Crossing” Yellow sign on the right.
Make an immediate LEFT onto Macadamia St. Take this down 1 long block until it ends.
Make a RIGHT onto Ainaloa Drive. Go a very short block to Tiki St. on the right.
The vacation rental is on the Left, right across from TiKi St.
16-2229 Ainaloa Rd.
There is a chain across the driveway from which you have a key to open, if Don, our care taker, has not yet done this.
Don’s Phone Numbers: 982-9826 or 938-9612 cell
PLACES TO SHOP AND BUY FOOD.
Before coming to our house, buy your groceries on the way off highway 11. There are large supermarkets on the Right side of the highway,
and at the Large shopping center complex on the Left, next to Borders, is a great health food store, and Wal Mart.
There are a couple of markets in Pahoa town,
one next to the gas station in a small shopping center complex, and further into the heart of Pahao town a small health food store, and a very “local” grocery market
Restaurants we like:
Café Pesto (Hilo)
Vietnamese Food near the Library (Hilo) and next to a Frame Shop (cheap and very good)
Kilauea Lodge (Volcano) is great for fine dining, specializing in meat.
Volcano lodge inside the park has good breakfasts and dinners too.
In Pahoa town we would recommend:
- Paolo's. Authentic the best Italian restaurants on this side of the island . Live classical guitar.
- the Thai Restaurant is good .
- The Cafe across from Luquin's Mexican is good for breakfast as is Luquin's which is famous.
- the Health food store for pick-nick snack.
The “hippie” resort Kalani Honua on the coast road going up to Kalapana has vegetarian food lunches, and is usually open to all.
PLACES TO CHECK OUT:
Hot Springs Pool (Public)
Take Pahoa- Kapoho Rd to the end (Issacs State Park/Beach)
Make sure you take the right fork (go straight onto a narrower road) just past the Lava Tree Park.
Make a left, and go about 1 mile. The park is on the right. Park, get your towel and valuables, and go towards the ocean.
The old Road to Kalapana, comes out of this area, and winds along the coast till it ends at the lava flow. Along this road are scenic lookouts, beaches (gotta climb down rocks), and Kalani Honua (a holistic oriented resort that has lunch and dinners based on macrobiotic food)
This is one road from which to see the lava flow at night.
Volcano Area
Features a park with many hiking trails, and the other access to the lava flow. Check with the ranger on the flow, and where to go and not to.
Art Gallery, and Museum at the Park with lots of cool stuff.
In Volcano Town, is a Art School, a good Thai Restaurant, and a couple of grocery stores and gas station.
Just past the State Park off the highway, take a right at the golf course, and follow the road to the end to Volcano’s only Winery.
Hilo Town
Lots of small shops with interesting stuff, multiple restaurants, and the outdoor Farmer’s market is on Saturdays to buy veggies and agricultural food wares, as well as arts and crafts.
Pahoa open Market
Another market similar to this is located just near the entrance to Ainaloa Blvd on the other side of the highway. On Sundays, this is a great place to buy locally made hot food, veggies, crafts, and meet a lot of old hippies.
Going North from Hilo along the Coast, there are many scenic places, Botanical gardens, and Akaka Falls. Take plenty of time and watch for cool roads on the right and left of the highway to explore.
